MDN Data Centers
MIDLOTHIAN, TX
Cummings Electrical provided electrical services for the MDN Data Center in Midlothian, Texas, a 60MW facility with a Central Utility Building. The project included switchgear and distribution skids installations. Despite challenges like tight schedules and pandemic restrictions, Cummings effectively used modular construction to ensure timely completion and high performance, establishing a reliable infrastructure for future operations.
Scope of Work
Cummings Electrical served as the electrical and low voltage contractor for the confidential MDN Data Center in Midlothian, Texas, delivering a 60MW, 300,000-square-foot, two-story steel frame facility with precast skin and a separate Central Utility Building (CUB). The project’s scope included the installation of (4) 1200A 25kV Main-Tie-Main switchgear lineups feeding (48) 4000A 480V/415V electrical distribution skids and (48) 2750kW 480V/415V generators, all backed by UPS systems providing full 60MW load redundancy. Additional responsibilities encompassed extensive site infrastructure installations, such as grounding, lightning protection, fire alarm, BMS, PMS, leak detection, and security systems. Cummings also managed over 30 subcontractors, coordinated peak manpower of 430 electricians, and handled documentation for Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning of all electrical equipment, BMS, and PMS systems.
Challenges & Solutions
The project faced significant challenges, including aggressive schedules, pandemic-related restrictions, and maintaining critical infrastructure uptime during construction. Cummings Electrical addressed these hurdles by leveraging modular construction techniques and skid-mounted semi-modular electrical designs to accelerate installation and ensure quality control. The team implemented expert planning, comprehensive Method of Procedures (MOPs) for work on or downstream of live equipment, and close collaboration with mechanical partners to balance temporary and permanent power needs—ensuring safe and efficient integration of critical systems while adhering to strict site safety measures.
